Week Three--June 30--Home to Harmony

Why do you think Minister Sam Gardner was so unenthusiastic about the annual revival at the Harmony Friends Meeting?

I think the annual revival is an example of how we as humans can go "overboard". To "revive" our souls and minds, many of us have to do this quietly. Having a loud/ visually stimulating revival plays into the entertainment world that we live. I don't think Sam Gardner liked the revival because he could see through the artificial layer that the revival promotes.

It seems that the revival can become more of a circus atmosphere than Rev. Gardner would like. He even states that his congregation feels kind of let down when the revival is over and he has to delivery the message.

Ooooh! That is so good Carmen! I really liked your response and agree with you on this question. I feel that God gives us wisdom and discernment and part of that discernment is being able to see through to the core of a situation. That is what Sam saw.

Too much emphasise on the enthusiasm, cheer leading, positive attitude, etc and not enough on ethical and morality teachings and leading by example.

I think they made him feel a little boring. These people come in with their props & acts, but they also have a testimony of a dramatic change when they turned their life over to God. Pastor Sam felt like since he'd always followed God and tried to live a good peaceful life, maybe he didn't have an exciting message to preach.

It sounds like their history of revivals has been less than he would have hoped for. That along with the reputation of the person leading their revival seems to have lessened his enthusiasm, by causing him to wonder what they were really trying to accomplish with this revival. Are they trying to spread the gospel, or just attract people for a "show".
