Week Two--June 23--Quiet Strength

Explain a few of the qualities of Tony Dungy's mom or dad that helped guide him into becoming who he is today. How do those qualities show in Tony's own decision making process?

Patience! A quality I wish I had. Tony has shown patience throughout his tenure with the Colts (and his entire football career). It always amazing me to watch how cool he is on the sidelines. It is a rare occasion when he loses his temper.

The other quality I picked up on was humility. I could not believe Tony did not know his father was a Tuskeegee airman until 2004! Tony himself is the picture of humility. I cannot think of a time he has taken credit for anything - he give all the credit to God and to others. Incredible.

I totally agree with the previous post. Being blessed and accepting that they are true blessings. Things happen for a reason. God is always in charge, and Dungy always displays a way of graciousness that most of us need to have.

I love that he always quietly seems to have control of situations. Without always flying of the handle, and acting obnoxious. A quality of thankfulness for what he has and giving the credit to God. A true man of character.

The fact that Tony didn't know his dad was part of the Tuskegee project until his death is an indication of the quiet strength of his father as well. His parents seemed to be hard working people that valued education and family and that is what I see in Tony. They also have things in perspective. We hold professional athletes and stars in higher regard than they should be. I didn't get the sense from the book that Tony's parents elevated him over his siblings because he was in professional sports.

They supported him but allowed him to make mistakes for a learning purpose.

He has learned to control his emotions. Education was important to both of his parents and to him.
