Week One--June 16--Quiet Strength

This past week, Tony Dungy was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame along with Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay and Colts president Bill Polian. With an overall 80-27 record since being named coach of the Colts in 2002, Tony Dungy clearly has what it takes to be the best coach so far in club history. What special qualities would you rank at the top for recognizing outstanding achivement in athletics?

I think special qualities that a person should have in recognizing outstanding achievement in athletics would be one that are a role model to others, there are people that look up to them especially when they get high rewards. They show dedication to their sport, do community service as well, volunteer, and show other athletes that you can achieve great things, by taking care of your body properly and that you do not need drugs to enhance performance. Good sportsman ship. Tony Dungy displays care, concern for not only his family but also his team, and every day citizens by his actions, and all the community work that he has done through his career, not only here but in Florida, and his other places he has coached.

i think character is far more important than a win-loss record (though, obviously wins are a good thing). i admire the fact that tony dungy has been a leader on and off the football field...professing his faith...living up to that faith... helping those in need...leading with a quiet strength that points toward his inner character.

Tony Dungy demonstrates his strong faith and character both on the field and off. One has to believe this also to be pre-dominant in the locker room. There is absolutely no comparison between the Colts and the Pacers. I truly believe that this goes back to the character and beliefs and expectations of the coach.

i think that being physically outstanding without integrity is an incident waiting to happen. Integrity must come with the outstanding records in sports or people will eventually tire of being a part.

Leadership. In team sports you cannot be a solo player. The great athletes in history have been leaders - respected and followed by their teammates. Tony is just this kind of great leader.

There are several characteristics that are important:
-Leadership
-Trust
-Dependability
-Good work ethic
-Good character
-One who care's about his family and community
-One who can control situations but also his temper

This can be explained in two words:
Tony Dungy

Being genuine is very important. Not being fake, admitting mistakes and learning from them. Being a family man, caring about the team, and the community.
Quiet strength, you just can't ask for more than that.

For Tony and Bill I would say it is timing. Without Peyton Manning, who knows where the Colts would be. However, I admire the fact that when Jim Irsay called Tony on the phone and said he wanted to create a culture or live up to a team mission statement, that I thought was awesome. I think that when you build things with the right foundation and stick to your values, good things happen. When it comes to halls of fame, usually statistics and impact on the game are your ticket in. When I think of Irsay and Dungy, I like to think that integrity, perspective, and values brought them the success they have had and will continue to have.

Patience is essential in the sports field. Also, I know Tony knows that God is in control of everything and when you trust God like that, you just go with the flow of things and trust that God has a purpose.
